The word glycolic is used more and more in the skincare industry these days. Glycolic can often be seen on the labels of high end skincare products. Women of all ages are getting glycolic acid peels in the offices of plastic surgeons all around the county. However, if most consumers were asked to define glycolic acid, the odds are most would not be able to accurately describe it.

So, what is glycolic acid? It is perhaps the best known of a group of chemicals called alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA’s.) It is derived from sugar cane and it is generally used as a natural skin exfoliant and moisturizer.

Glycolic acid works as an exfoliating agent due to its high acidity but easy solubility. When placed on the skin it goes under the damaged upper layers and destroys the “glue” which holds dead skin cells to the surface.

Chemical exfoliation such as a glycolic acid peel will improve:

-fine lines

-irregular skin texture

-uneven tone

-photodamaged skin

-acneic skin

-rosacea

-dehydrated skin

-congested skin

Benefits of glycolic acid peels:

-more youthful appearance

-smoother looking skin

-minimizes the appearance of fine lines

-improves elasticity

-improves skin tone and texture

-refines the appearance of pores

-reduces appearance of superficial hyperpigmentation

-improves skin’s overall appearance

Quite often after most chemical peels, a patient’s skin will look as if it were extremely sunburned. Several days of recovery are often necessary for a complete recovery from a glycolic acid peel. However, the results are worth the temporary down time.

Can glycolic acid be considered the Fountain of Youth? That is debatable but the bottom line is that chemical exfoliation can provide amazing results. There is no doubt that it is effective when used correctly and in the proper concentration level for an individual’s needs.

Contact Belmont Plastic Surgery to find out if a glycolic acid peel is the ideal treatment for you.

*Special Note: It is recommended to always use a broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen product after any chemical exfoliation.*

We are at that time of year when school is out and everyone is gearing up to have a great, activity filled summer. Whether you are taking the kids to the pool, relaxing at the beach, hiking or riding bikes, we all have one thing in common: SUN EXPOSURE!

Getting a healthy dose of Vitamin D from the sun (20 minutes per day) is vital to everyone, but it is easy to get TOO much sun. Excessive sun exposure can lead to hyper-pigmenation (brown spots), as well as the loss of collagen and elastin. Regardless of your chronological age, uneven skin tone is perceived as older skin.

Everyone should be using broad spectrum sun screen daily on all exposed skin. This is especially important for those trying to rid themselves of hyper-pigmentation. As with any smart sun strategy, consider wearing protective clothing and wide brimmed hats IN ADDITION to your sun screen products. Avoid prolonged UV exposure between the hours of 10AM and 4PM. Dedication to these suggestions is the only answer to prevent solar induced hyper-pigmentation.

But how realistic is that?? It’s not. We can’t live in a cave. We want to enjoy our outdoor summertime activities. So frolic in the waves at the shore and have fun at picnics with family and friends. The effects of sun exposure are practically unavoidable but we have some solutions!

1. Chemical Peels

Hyper-pigmentation which occurs from acne, the sun or injury, is in the epidermis. Light chemical peels which employ glycolic or lactic acids in addition to fruit enzymes, exfoliate the upper layers of the skin to reduce discoloration. The peeling agent used determines how deep and effective the peel is.

2. Vi Peel

Hyper-pigmentation can be reduced with the Vi Peel. It will improve the tone, texture, and clarity of your skin. Whether you are experiencing age spots or freckles from sun exposure, you will see results from this peel in approximately one week.

3. Microdermabrasion

You don’t need to live in Hollywood to have access to celebrity skin care. Microdermabrasion is a fine, controlled spray of crystals that gently exfoliates the outer layers of the skin. This promotes cell turnover and helps minimize fine lines and wrinkles. The result is younger looking skin. Who doesn’t want to look their absolute best?

Enjoy the beautiful sunny days that summer has to offer. However, take proper precautions to avoid excessive sun exposure. Consider these accessible skin care treatments whether it is a chemical peel, Vi Peel, or Microdermabration to maintain healthy skin. Remember: healthy skin=younger looking skin. Contact our office to determine which solution is best for you!
