Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a great tool to enhance the size or shape of your breasts, restore volume after significant weight loss or pregnancy or as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery.

A breast augmentation procedure can vary greatly depending on the needs and goals of the patient, but the outcome is generally the same— fuller breasts and better self-confidence. During your consultation with Dr. Feledy, he will work with you to achieve natural satisfying results based on your breast enhancement goals.

FAQ About Breast Augmentation

Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation?

Ideal candidates for breast augmentation come in all shapes and sizes, but should possess good overall mental and physical health. Women elect breast augmentation for a variety of reasons, but it is essential to have realistic expectations prior to surgery. During the consultation process, Dr. Feledy will be able to determine if you are an ideal candidate for breast augmentation.

Should I get silicone or saline implants?

Getting Natural Results

"These days, breast augmentation is more natural looking, particularly since surgeons often place implants under the chest muscle. Most patients are really excited about the results.”

 - Dr. Feledy, Bethesda Magazine, Oct. '08

There are two types of breast implants: silicone and saline. Silicone implants are pre-filled with a silicone gel prior to surgery, while saline implants are filled with a salt water solution during surgery. There are moderate differences in aesthetic outcome and cost that will be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Feledy.

What should I expect during surgery?

Typically, breast augmentation takes 1-2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Feledy will make appropriate surgical incisions (below the breast, at the nipple, underarm, or navel), and then insert the breast implant into the breast pocket, which is created either above or below the chest muscle. Once the implant has been centered below the nipple, the incisions will be closed with sutures and covered with an adhesive.

What should I expect during recovery?

When you return home after breast augmentation, you will need to wear a special bra to aid in healing for up to two weeks. Most patients are able to return to work within a week of surgery. Strenuous activities or exercise should be avoided for up to three weeks. It is realistic to anticipate some pain during the recovery process. Dr. Feledy may prescribe pain medication to help alleviate discomfort.

What are some of the risks associated with breast augmentation?

All surgical procedures present a degree of risk. Breast augmentation is considered safe and complications are rare. Complications may include bleeding, infection, adverse reactions to anesthesia, scarring or asymmetry.
