Breast Lift
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is performed to return a youthful shape to the breasts. Women undergo mastopexy to elevate breasts that have sagged as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, loss of the skin elasticity, or simply the effects of aging and gravity. A breast lift can also reduce areolar size (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), and can be combined with breast reduction or augmentation to enhance breast firmness or size.
After weight loss, there may be considerable changes in the size and shape of your breasts. Many women also have a significant lateral breast roll that blends into their back. In select patients, this lateral skin can be elevated and rotated into the breast to help auto-augment the size of the breasts. This technique allows Dr. Feledy to enlarge your breasts without the use of breast implants.
FAQ About Breast Lift
Who is a candidate for breast lift surgery?
Women select breast lift surgery for a variety of reasons. The ideal candidate is in overall good physical and mental health with a stable weight. She is also a non-smoker who has realistic expectations for the outcome. Physically, you may be an excellent candidate for breast lift surgery if your nipples hang below the breast crease, if they point downward, if the breasts sag or are flattened, or if one breast hangs lower than the other.
What are the steps in breast lift surgery?
Surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and lasts from one to three hours. Techniques vary for each patient. A standard technique uses three incisions to lift the breast. The first incision runs around the areola, the second from the areola to the bottom of the breast, and the third underneath the breast. Following incision, excess skin and tissue are removed and theareola is repositioned higher on the breast. Some patients may be candidates for a less extensive breast lift incision pattern.
What happens after the procedure?
Recovery time is one to two weeks, with limited activity for about six weeks. You will need to wear a supportive bra following the procedure, until the post-operative swelling and bruising has faded. Lines from the incisions will fade over time as they heal, though they may always be slightly visible. The breasts will settle into their positions over time, though future adjustments may be made if necessary.
Are there risks or side effects?
Very rarely, loss of some or all sensation in the nipples or breasts may occur, and may interfer with future breastfeeding ability. In the event of poor healing or dramatic changes in body weight, you may need revision surgery. As with any surgical procedure, there are risks such as poor healing, infection, bleeding and reaction to anesthesia. All risks and potential adverse outcomes will be discussed in detail during your consultation with Dr. Feledy.
