Chin Surgery
Mentoplasty, popularly known as chin surgery, is a surgical procedure that modifies the shape and contour of the chin to make it more attractive and fit better with the overall appearance of the face. This may be accomplished with an implant, in the case of enlargement, or with reduction surgery on the bone to make the chin smaller.
Dr. Feledy routinely performs chin surgeries in Maryland and Virginia. The procedure is often performed alongside other surgeries, such as rhinoplasty, in order to ensure the best results.
FAQ About Chin Surgery
Am I a good candidate for chin surgery?
People who find that their chins are not in proportion with the rest of their faces can often benefit from chin surgery. Patients should be generally healthy and have reasonable expectations about what surgery can offer. An overly prominent chin can be corrected with reduction surgery, while a weak chin can be augmented with implants.
What happens during chin reduction surgery?
This procedure begins with an incision, usually inside the mouth, where scarring cannot be seen. The bone at the tip of the chin is detached and reshaped in order to provide a more pleasing contour. The chin structure may also be reshaped using other methods. The incisions are then sutured.
What happens during chin augmentation surgery?
As with reduction surgery, Dr. Feledy begins by making an incision in the mouth. He then reshapes the chin through the placement of implants, which cause the chin to appear more prominent. After the implants have been put in place, he sutures up the incisions, and the surgery is complete.
What can I expect after the surgery?
Most patients are able to return home soon after surgery. Depending on the nature and extent of your mentoplasty, you will likely experience soreness for some days after the procedure, and may need to limit activities such as chewing.
Surgical dressings will remain in place for a few days. Once swelling has subsided, you will see the final results – more pleasing contours and balanced facial features.
