Most commonly known as chin surgery or a chin augmentation, medically known as a mentoplasty, this popular surgical procedure modifies the shape and contour of your chin to make it more attractive and fit better with the overall appearance of your face. Dr. Feledy has a history of performing excellent chin augmentation procedures that Washington DC and Northern Virginia patients rave about.
“From a pretty young age I had become introverted on how my chin was small and sort of ran into my neck. I'd heard of getting a chin augmentation and I am so glad I did. It greatly improved the look of my face and neck and I feel so much more confident.” - R.Z.*

Chin Augmentation Surgery
What is chin augmentation surgery?
Chin surgery or chin augmentation is a procedure where the shape of your chin is modified to give you improved symmetry with your other facial features. This process may be accomplished by using a chin implant, in the case of enlargement or with surgical reduction of the bone to make your chin smaller. The procedure is often performed alongside other surgeries, such as rhinoplasty, in order to ensure the most ideal outcome and best results.
Why you may want chin surgery:
A chin augmentation is most often desired by individuals who genetically have a weaker chin line that can cause the face to tend to appear as though it runs into the neck. Another factor, with age, fat deposits in the neck and gravity can cause the face and its appearance in relation to the chin to change. When a bolder and more defined jaw line is desired, this option can address those physical concerns and resolve them.

Am I a good candidate for chin implant surgery?
People who find that their chins are not in proportion with the rest of their face can often benefit from chin surgery. Patients should be generally healthy and have reasonable expectations about what surgery can offer. An overly prominent chin can be corrected with a chin reduction surgery, while a weak chin can be augmented using chin implants.
Is chin surgery safe?
Surgery inherently carries some risk of complications and these can typically be minimized by a great plastic surgeon. The risks to consider in getting a chin augmentation will be discussed with you by Dr. Feledy during your consultation. Examples of these include standard risks like infection, bleeding and the possibility of scarring. All efforts are taken to ensure any risks are lessened. Be sure to ask Dr. Feledy any questions you have related to this during your consultation.
What happens during chin reduction surgery?
A chin reduction begins with an incision, usually inside the mouth, where scarring cannot be seen. The bone at the tip of the chin is detached and reshaped in order to provide a more pleasing contour. The chin structure may also be reshaped using other methods. The incisions are then sutured.
What happens during chin augmentation surgery?
Dr. Feledy begins by making an incision in the mouth. He then reshapes the chin through the placement of chin implants, which cause the chin to appear more prominent. After the implants have been put in place, he sutures the incisions and the surgery is complete.
What can I expect after the surgery?
Most patients are able to return home soon after surgery. Depending on the nature and extent of your chin augmentation (mentoplasty), you will likely experience soreness for a few days after the procedure, and may need to limit activities, such as chewing.
What results can I expect?
Surgical dressings will remain in place for a few days. When the swelling has subsided, you be able to remove the dressings and see the final results of more chin and neck contours and more balanced facial features.
