Why Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons Are The Ones To Trust

When considering any surgical procedure, one of the most critical decisions you will have to make is which surgeon to choose. There are many surgeons out there, but none are more qualified or experienced that those board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).
It is often easy to get confused when it comes to the board certification of your surgeon. There are actually two different kinds of certification in the United States. First, there are the cosmetic surgeons that receive their certification from the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS). Then, there are the plastic surgeons certified by the ABPS. It is important to know that the two are very different. Here are some things to know about each kind.
ABCS CERTIFIED COSMETIC SURGEONS
ABCS certified Cosmetic Surgeons receive certification for specific areas at a time. For example, they can receive certification for Body and Breast Surgery, Dermatologic Cosmetic Surgery, Facial Cosmetic Surgery, and General Cosmetic Surgery.
In order for a doctor to receive certification, one must fill out an application, prove valid hospital operating privileges, and submit four letters of recommendation.
ABPS CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEONS
ABPS certified Plastic Surgeons go through in depth and lengthy training in order to receive their board certification. These surgeons have the most experience and the training – something you should always consider when choosing your surgeon.
In order to receive this ABPS certification, a surgeon must graduate from an accredited medical school and complete a five-year residency program of additional training. They must then pass both written and oral exams in order to receive the final certification.
So when you are looking around for your surgeon, you can’t go wrong with an ABPS certified plastic surgeon. Each one has received specific training in all of the different kinds of surgeries, from reconstruction procedures to cosmetic procedures like breast augmentation and tummy tucks.
